For the majority of the day, your smart phone is probably glued to the palm of your hand.  We’re pretty sure you’re checking the news, scrolling Facebook and texting back three different people all while reading this blog. We live in a society governed by the smart phone. So why don’t we let it work for us sometimes?

Head over to the app store–you might do it before you even finish reading this entire post and we’re okay with it–and peruse a few of our favorite apps for healthy lifestyle.

  1. FitStar Personal Trainer (Free)
    • Imagine the expertise of a personal trainer at the gym, except now it’s from the comfort of your own home for free!  FitStar asks questions to personalize a fitness routine just for you.  It provides you with workouts based on your fitness level and, while it won’t completely leave you down and out, it will provide you with challenging workouts that will leave you sweating.
    • You can integrate FitStar with the Health app built into your iPhone and track calories and workouts.
  2. C25K (Free)
    • We believe in the power of goal setting and that’s just what the Couch to 5K app will help you do.  With the goal of completing a 5K in mind, C25K creates a running regimen for you to follow.  Every day it will tell you how long and how far you need to run and walk to reach your 5K goal.
    • This app trains you three times per week for a half hour each time.  It’s the length of your favorite sitcom and provides results. How can you beat that?
  3. MyFitnessPal (Free)
    • Keeping a food log is becoming more and more stone age, but not with the help of this app.  It lets you input recipes or choose from a list of brand name foods in order to keep track of your calorie intake. You can set goals and watch as MyFitnessPal tracks your meals.
    • This app also connects to a variety of other apps and softwares such as Fitbit, C25K and MapMyFitness.
  4. Ingredient1 (Free)
    • Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring. Instead of choosing the same piece of bland chicken and mixed veggies for lunch, Ingredient1 can introduce you to new flavors and foods based on your preferences. Fill out their questionnaire so they can personalize new choices just for you and create a shopping list for your next trip to the grocery store.
    • Ingredient1 supports many different diet choices so choose the one that’s best for you and start virtually shopping away!

A healthy diet and good exercise are just what you need to keep that weight off after surgery.  Let your smart phone help you out by sending notifications reminding you to work out or prep your dinner.  You won’t regret a full home screen when it means you’re on your way to a healthier lifestyle!
