Today, we’re going to burst your bubble. We’re going to tell you something about weight loss surgery that might shock you or disarm you.  We feel like it’s our right to tell you so that you know what you might be getting yourself into.  Ready?

Weight loss surgery is not a magic bean.

It’s not an enchanted surgery that leaves you skinny forever and magically zaps away all your health problems. Weight loss surgery doesn’t take away all the issues in one fell swoop.  Instead, surgery is the first step on the path to a healthy lifestyle.

Okay, so maybe we didn’t completely shock you.  Maybe you’re sitting here wondering how the rest of your steps into a healthy lifestyle are supposed to look.  Maybe you need some advice to get you going.  Look no further, then, because you’ve come to the right place.

Two Tips for Post Weight Loss Surgery Success:

  1. Exercise
    • This may seem like a no brainer, but we should add an important caveat: Exercise in a way that makes you sweat.
    • While there is definitely no scientific or medical evidence to this, start thinking of sweat as fat dripping off your body.  When you exercise, be sure to get your heart rate up, your breathing heavy and your sweat pouring.
    • A stroll around the block before bed may be soothing, but it’s not what will help you shed the pounds. Join a gym, take a cardio class or start swimming laps at the local pool.
  2. Don’t graze
    • Of course you’ve got to eat healthy and maintain a balanced diet.  Don’t have too many carbs or too much fat.  Get rid of processed foods and pack lots of vegetables in. Don’t drink your calories (i.e.: sodas, milkshakes, sugary lattes, etc.). Once again, though, we’re going a step further.
    • Eat enough at your three daily meals to feel full.  This will keep you from snacking later on in the day. Eat your lunch and get back to work; don’t leave candy or chips lying around near your desk.
    • Powering through your day on three square meals means those meals should be packed with protein and good nutrients. Check back in to the blog for great healthy recipes that will keep you full and focused.

We believe in your success after surgery.  We are confident in the first step you’ve taken toward an improved lifestyle.  If you’d like to talk to a doctor more in-depth regarding your post-surgery success please call Dr. Fass.
